Oceanographic insights and/or products for societal use (e.g., for MPAs, EBM, or products from OOS)
(co-chairs: Steven Bograd, Steve Ramp, Jan Newton, & Loo Botsford )

For this session, we invite submission of papers describing the application of oceanographic information to or development of oceanographic products for specific societal goals. Examples include ecosystem-based management (EBM) including fisheries management, the design, implementation or evaluation of marine-protected areas (MPAs), search and rescue, and oil spill mitigation. Other applications are of course welcome also. Papers may convey either how oceanographic knowledge or insight can contribute to societal needs or describe products that are developing as a result of ocean observing systems (OOS). Studies may fall within a wide range of scales, from, say, the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem to more regional marine or estuarine environments with a focus on the Eastern Pacific and the west coast of North America.
