Thompson Cruise August 8-9 16:30 local time
We completed the first profiling transect early on August 8 with pump stations at the inshore and offshore ends. After an ADCP transect back inshore, we returned to CH-3 (midshelf mooring site) to start a 48 h time series. Turbulence, chemistry, and optics are all on-line. Ricardo's group completed 2 light/dark transitions for pigments and FRRF with 14C incubations at either end for the second series. August 9 at noon we started the midshelf pump station. We are back into profiling mode now. Burke reports over 20 uM nitrate in surface water, chlorophyll fluorescence is low about 0.3 v.
Everything is working very well. Moum's group has had to repair/rebuild every Chameleon so far, but we have managed with only a few short gaps in data collection. Winds have died down considerably. So far there is enough current that Moum can profile without the ship being underway.
"Large particles" (zooplankton) appear in the bottom 20 m between 13:00-17:00 local time and then another large patch appear at the in the upper 40 m from 01:00 to 05:00 during the first day of our time series.
At 14:30 tomorrow afternoon (Aug10) we will finish the time series.
Plans afterwards:
ADCP CH-3 to CH-6, CH-6 to CH-1
Inshore pump station (1 h)
Profiling transect CH-1 to CH-6 (about 11 h at 1 kt and no wind)
Offshore pump station (2 h).Pat Wheeler Chief Scientist, Thompson
