Subject: Revelle Report 1-6 Feb.During the last five days we completed three more profiling transects between CH-1 and CH-6.5. These included chemistry and optics for the surface water and filling carboys with surface water for the organic and pigments measurements. This will be a very nice series for comparisons across the sharp salinity gradients along the CH-line on 1 and 2 Feb compared with a narrower range in surface salinity conditions on 5 Feb.
We took advantage of the good weather on 5 Feb to retrieve Moum's bottom lander. The spar buoy was detached so we needed to drag for the bottom line to pull the weight and lander back on board. The chief fabricated a grapnel and when that failed, gamely contrively a fix to it. During the actual recvovery (which took three drags and 12 + hours) the ship's crew were open-minded and resourceful and contributed to the success. The spar buoy was later found near Cape Lookout. During the work near CH-5 we were able to include five light/dark transitions for Ricardo's fluoresence measurements.
On 4 Feb Moum's group took a break and we continued with ADCP and underway surface sampling and bottom mapping during the night. Our last profile (Chameleon #13) was completed on 5 Feb and we are finishing off with more bottom mapping and several more ADCP transects acroos the CH-line.
In summary, we are delighted with the results of the winter cruise and are returning to Newport this afternoon after completing 12 successful profiling transects, 18 pump stations, and more than 50 ADCP transects along the CH line. Thanks and congratulations to all the scientists and crew aboard Revelle! Good luck to the WECOMA for their last few days of work.
